Jungle Theatre Company’s African Folktales Festival is an annual event which has been running for 4 consecutive years. Last year’s festival brought close to 3 000 learners, educators, parents and caregivers to the theatre.
“The show (Hoerikwaggo) gave them (the learners) a sense of belonging since they recognise their area and similar cultures.” – Battswood Primary
Jungle’s shows are based on African Folktales and carry messages pertaining to social, environmental, and cultural themes. The shows relate to the CAPS curriculum (Language, Social Sciences, Natural science & technology, Life Skills, and Performing Arts) and supporting resource materials are provided to the educators for classroom learning.
Shows are generally between 30-45 minutes in duration and are suitable for primary school learners, grades 1 to 7. Shows are accompanied by post-show interactive workshops (30 minutes) where learners get to act out some of the characters of the show and learn the songs and movements.
